The AAA says Americans saved about $27 billion at the pump this year compared to last year through lower gas prices, but we’re greeting the new year with prices on the rise again.

New Yorkers will get a bit of a break starting New Year’s day. The state gasoline tax is set to drop by 0.8 cents per gallon. That will partly offset the prices that have been rising a couple of cents per week in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse. Rochester is now averaging $2.43 a gallon, up two cents since Monday.

AAA says the prices increases should stop and even roll back once the holiday travel season is over during January.
