The man accused of killing Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz and injuring Officer Sino Seng last month has been indicted by a grand jury on eight counts.
Kelvin Vickers, 21, of Boston, is charged with aggravated murder for the officer’s death, and aggravated attempted murder for the wounding of officer Seng. He’s accused of shooting both officers from the concealment of some bushes on Bauman Street. A 15-year-old girl in a nearby home was also grazed by a bullet.
In a news conference, District Attorney Sandra Doorley said the aggravated murder charge is for the killing of a police officer in line of duty, and it alleges the defendant knew or should have known he was shooting at police officers. Vickers also stands accused of two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
He remains charged with two counts of second degree murder and other charges. He faces arraignment on August 10.
Doorley said Vickers has a long criminal record in Massachusetts dating back to the age of 12. He was released from Prison in Boston at the end of May after serving time on a weapon charge. Doorley would not comment or speculate on why Vickers was in Rochester.
