Seven people are hospitalized after the horse-drawn carriage they were riding in was struck by a car in Yates County Sunday evening.
Sheriff Ron Spike says the crash happened about 5:15 p.m. on East Sherman Hollow Road. Driver Justin Niver, 24, came up from behind the carriage and tried to pass it. But he spotted another car coming at him from the opposite direction and tried to cut back into his lane, striking the carriage.
Carriage driver Matthew Sensing, 33, and his family were all ejected from the buggy into a field by the impact. Sensing and his wife suffered head injuries. Their five children were also injured. The horse was euthanized at the scene by a veterinarian.
All the injured were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, and all are now in stable condition.
The sheriff says Niver had not been drinking an cooperated with police. No charges have been filed.
