Six people escaped when their multi-family house went up in flames Wednesday afternoon on Alexander Street in Rochester.

Firefighters were called out in the early afternoon, and a second alarm was declared when they found fire had spread from the second floor to the attic.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents with new housing. An investigation found the fire started because of people smoking on the porch.
