Five people, two adults and three children, escaped without injury Tuesday night when fire broke out in the attic of an up-and-down double house on Flower City Park.

The fire at 476 Flower City was around the corner from the Dewey and Ridgeway fire station, and fire crews arrived almost immediately. They found flames shooting from the attic windows.

The upstairs resident said she saw the lights flicker and smelled smoke, so she grabbed her child and got out. The downstairs resident also noticed the smoke and fled with two children.

Firefighters were driven back by a roof collapse, but were able to get back in the house and douse the fire from inside. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
