In June, the Greece School Board voted to ban “lunch shaming,” or turning a student out of the lunch line because they didn’t have their lunch money.

Now four schools in the district say they’ll provide free breakfast and lunch for all students this coming year. A new state law also bans “lunch shaming.”

English Village, Lakeshore, Longridge and West Ridge Elementary schools will all have free meals this year regardless of household income. The district says nearly 2,000 students will have access to those meals because of the Community Eligibility Provision of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program.

In Greece, 42 percent of last year’s students qualified for free or reduced price meals. That qualifies the district for the program.
