A five-layer investigation is underway after the Monroe County Jail experienced its 3rd suicide in 12 months.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says a guard making rounds at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday found an inmate hanging by a bed sheet from the cell bars. The inmate’s name has not been released. Deputies and emergency medical personnel began efforts to revive the man, but he died about an hour later at the hospital.

Sheriff Todd Baxter says checks are made of the cell block every 24 to 25 minutes, which meets state standards calling for every 30 minutes. Jail officials say there were no signs the inmate was in distress.
