geneseo-welcome-signSUNY Geneseo now says they have four confirmed cases of students with the mumps, two living off campus and two living on campus.

The college told students who have never been immunized to go home when the first case was discovered last week. They have to stay off campus for a minimum of 26 days, and that latency period resets every time a new case is confirmed.

The college’s medical director said when the first case was confirmed that more could be expected. Immunization against the mumps loses effectiveness with time, and many students haven’t had the MMR shot since they were school kids.

The Geneseo campus isn’t quarantined, but college officials say there’s a risk if you’ve never been immunized or have a weakened immune system.
