A second member of the Greece Police Department has filed a notice of claim stating that he intends to sue the department and the Town of Greece.

Published reports say Sgt. Bryan Root claims in court papers that he was retaliated against after raising concerns over how the town was handling the drunken SUV crash of former Police Chief Drew Forsythe. The former chief crashed his department-issued vehicle into a guardrail on Route 390 last October, saying he swerved to miss a deer. Root said he was suspicious the chief and town officials were hiding the magnitude of the accident, visited the scene of the crash and concluded based on groove marks in the road that Forsythe’s story was inconsistent with the evidence.

Root then took photos of the wrecked SUV in the impound lot. About that time, then-Deputy Chief Casey Voelkl grew concerned and contacted the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office. Voelkl filed suit against the town last month.

Root says he was suspended out of retaliation. His attorney says he deserves better for doing the right thing.
