New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul officially launched the 200th anniversary commemoration of the Erie Canal today with ceremonies at the Waterford Locks near Albany.
Crews started digging 200 years ago this summer near Rome for the canal that links the Hudson River and Albany to Lake Erie and Buffalo. It was the first major transportation artery from the Atlantic Port of New York City to the new American Frontier.
It’s also the first day of boating season on the 524 mile canal system which includes the Erie.
