The two remaining suspects in the 2015 Genesee Street mass shooting won’t be tried together because one of the defense attorneys requires surgery.
Trial for Michael Mathis has been delayed until January because of attorney Jim Hinman’s medical issue. The second suspect, Jalen Everett, goes on trial Monday as planned.
Prosecutors wanted to try both men together because of the complex business of contacting the many witnesses involved and getting them into court at the right time in the earlier trial of Johnny Blackshell, Jr.
Mathis and Everett are accused of joining with Blackshell in the drive-by shooting outside the Boys and Girls Club that left three young men dead and wounded four other people.
