Rochester police say two boys were walking at the corner of Atkinson and Reynolds Streets Monday night when they were shot by at least one suspect who remains unknown, as does the motive for the shooting.

A 12-year-old boy was found dead at the scene when police arrived, alerted by the city’s ShotSpotter system. A 16-year-old was shot and wounded. He was found around the corner on Prospect Street and was taken to the hospital. He’s currently in serious but stable condition.

No arrest has yet been made.

In a Tuesday morning press conference, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said people should step up anonymously and tell who did it through Crime Stoppers. He said parents should wrap their arms around their children, know where they are and know who they’re talking to. He said the city will do whatever it can to keep children safe. He said the city is rich in programs that can help if people will use them.

Police Chief David Smith said this is emotionally upsetting and the officers who arrived first will never forget it.
